Stockholm

One Of Our Favorite Cities In Europe

Stockholm is easily one of our favorite cities in Europe. It’s the perfect mix of cool, design and warm, welcoming energy. If you’re into food, design, and relaxed city vibes – you’re in for a treat.

Whether you visit in winter or summer, Stockholm has its own kind of charm. In winter, daylight fades as early as 2 PM, but the city turns warm and welcoming – with beautifully decorated cafés, glowing Christmas lights, and that unmistakable Scandinavian coziness. Come summer, especially in June and July, the sun barely sets, and Stockholm transforms – full of energy, outdoor life, and that rare feeling of a city that doesn’t quite sleep.

The culinary scene here is super diverse. From modern, trend-driven spots to cozy restaurants serving traditional Swedish dishes, there’s something for every taste. Swedes are proud of their culture, and you can feel that – even in the most contemporary places. Many restaurants also carry a French influence, which gives the food scene a lovely, refined twist.

A little tip: people in Sweden tend to eat early. By 6 PM, most restaurants are already full – especially on weekends. So if there’s a place you really want to try, be sure to book ahead.

Getting to Stockholm is easy, with direct flights from most major cities. Just try to book early – it’s a busy business route, so flights fill up quickly.

If you’re planning a night out, be ready for lots of pop – both Swedish and international such as deep house music. Hip hop or reggaeton is harder to find, but not impossible.

Stockholm is also a dream for shopping. Expect lots of great Nordic brands, curated concept stores, and beautifully designed interiors.

And the people? Super kind – just a little reserved at first. So don’t wait, say hi first!

Don’t miss the chance to try all the different pastries in the many bakeries – if you love cardamom and yeasted dough, you’re in the right place!

Helpful Tips

Hotel or Airbnb?

Hotels in Sweden can be quite pricey – it's worth checking out Airbnbs as a budget-friendly alternative.

Adapter needed?

In Sweden, type C and F sockets are used. These are the same types as in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (with two round pins). If you're coming from a country with a different plug type (e.g. the USA, UK, or Australia), you’ll need a suitable travel adapter.

Currency

Swedish Krona (SEK)

Stockholm is largely cashless – many places only accept card payments.

Tipping yes or no?

Tipping is not expectet in Sweden, but it is appreciated for excellent service. Around 10% is normal

Is public transportation recommended?

Yes, public transportation is recommended – especially since the city is spread across several islands. The metro is the easiest way to get around, but buses are also available.

If you're planning to travel around Sweden by train, make sure to book your seat in advance – prices vary, and on many routes, you’re not allowed to board without a reserved seat.

Getting from the Airport to the City

The fastest way to the city center is the Arlanda Express train (20 min, ~€30 one way). Tickets are available at machines, online, or via the ARN express app. Buses are cheaper but much slower. For groups of 3 or more, Uber can be more cost-effective.

Restaurants

Important note: In July, some restaurants – especially in non-touristy areas – close for a summer break of 2–4 weeks. Make sure to check online before you go.

One of our favorite restaurants in Stockholm is tucked away in Norrmalm — a small and intimate spot offering high-level cuisine that makes you feel right at home while still delivering a full restaurant experience. With one foot rooted in classic French cooking and the other stepping boldly into innovation and creativity, this place knows no boundaries.

Another Stockholm favorite — perfect for an easygoing yet stylish lunch between shopping. The menu blends Swedish and broader European flavors, inspired by New York’s deli culture.

A boundary-pushing spot, this tiny restaurant celebrates food in its purest form — a true culinary highlight.
