Oyster Fishing Grebbestad- Sweden
An important note: this experience is about harvesting wild oysters using sustainable, traditional methods.
We first discovered Lotta in a magazine — a Swedish oyster diver in Grebbestad, a small town about 1 hour and 45 minutes north of Gothenburg, who offers wild oyster harvesting experiences.
Ever since then, it had been on our list of things we absolutely wanted to do. In March, the moment finally came. After a few emails with Lotta and a booking on Airbnb, we flew to Gothenburg and drove our rental car up to Grebbestad.
We highly recommend renting a car — public transport to Grebbestad is very limited, and having a car makes it much easier to explore the surrounding area.
It’s also good to know that Grebbestad and the surrounding area are especially popular with Swedes and Norwegians during the summer months. In winter, it’s much quieter — but also more affordable.

Helpful Tips
Hotel or Airbnb?
There aren’t any hotels in Grebbestad that truly convinced us, so we recommend staying in an Airbnb instead. We were very happy with ours — it has three bedrooms and can accommodate up to six people, though there is only one bathroom. We wouldn’t necessarily recommend staying with more than four people, but of course it depends on your personal preference for space and privacy.
Another reason to choose an Airbnb is that we couldn’t find many good restaurants open during the winter months — so having a well-equipped kitchen was perfect. We ended up cooking for ourselves, which made the stay even more cozy and enjoyable.
Adapter needed?
In Sweden, type C and F sockets are used. These are the same types as in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (with two round pins). If you're coming from a country with a different plug type (e.g. the USA, UK, or Australia), you’ll need a suitable travel adapter.
