Ett Hem Stockholm Sweden
In July, we finally stayed at Ett Hem – a hotel that had been on our list for a long time.
Tucked away in the heart of Stockholm, Ett Hem offers a truly unique hospitality concept.
More than a hotel, it feels like being welcomed into a beautifully designed private home, where every detail has been thoughtfully considered and every guest is made to feel genuinely at home.
What to Expect
Your experience begins before you even step inside.
You arrive in front of a grand townhouse, hidden behind high walls and a closed gate. To enter, you ring the bell and wait to be welcomed inside. With only 25 rooms, this isn't a place where people simply wander in. It immediately creates the feeling that you're entering someone's private home rather than checking into a hotel.
That said, you don't have to be a hotel guest to experience Ett Hem. The restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner reservations.
One of the first things that caught our attention was that Ett Hem has deliberately chosen not to be rated with hotel stars.
When asked why, the answer is simple: "We don't want stars. We don't want to limit ourselves or adapt to standards that don't fit who we are or our concept."
We loved that philosophy.
Hotel stars inevitably come with criteria and expectations. Choosing to step away from that system is a bold decision, and Ett Hem is proof that true luxury doesn't need a star rating.
Because make no mistake—nothing is missing here.
From the beautiful interiors and tranquil spa with its sauna and heated stone room to the intimate gym, every physical detail has been thoughtfully considered. But the real luxury isn't found in the design or the facilities.
It's the people.
The level of hospitality you experience here is something that can only partly be taught in hotel school. The rest comes down to personality, emotional intelligence, and genuine care for others.
Knowing what a guest needs before they ask. Recommending dinner naturally, without ever handing over a menu. Creating an atmosphere where every guest feels comfortable enough to treat the house as if it were their own.
That is a rare skill.
Finding the balance between being relaxed, warm and approachable while delivering service at an exceptionally high level is something very few hotels truly master. And yet, at Ett Hem, it never feels forced or overly formal—it simply feels effortless.
The Concept
Ett Hem isn't a hotel for everyone—and that's exactly what makes it so special.
To truly appreciate the experience, you have to enjoy letting go. You have to be open to trusting the people around you and allowing them to make certain decisions for you. Most importantly, you have to trust the team's carefully curated selection of products, food, and experiences.
We loved that.
In a world where we're expected to make hundreds of decisions every day, Ett Hem quietly removes many of them. And honestly, that's one of the greatest luxuries it offers.
Today, almost everything comes with endless options. More choices, more menus, more customization. At some point, it becomes exhausting—especially when your work and daily life already require constant decision-making.
Breakfast is the perfect example.
There is no breakfast menu.
Instead, a beautiful selection simply appears: homemade yoghurt with granola, freshly baked bread, cheeses, cured meats and eggs prepared however you like them.
And if we're being honest with ourselves—that's really all you need.
For dinner, you simply choose whether you'd like to dine at the hotel or not. If you do, you're offered either a three-course or a seven-course tasting menu, with the option of wine pairing.
We chose the seven-course menu, and it was outstanding.
Each course felt carefully considered, beautifully balanced and never overly complicated. Despite seven courses, we left feeling perfectly satisfied rather than uncomfortably full—a balance that is surprisingly difficult to achieve.
During dinner, conversations naturally unfold—not only with the team but also with other guests.
If you're open to it, the evening often leads to genuinely interesting exchanges. There is no pressure, no pretence, and no sense that anyone is trying to be someone they're not. The atmosphere feels remarkably relaxed and authentic, regardless of whether you're speaking with a member of the team or another guest.
That authenticity is something we rarely experience in luxury hospitality.
It's a place where people simply enjoy good food, meaningful conversations, and each other's company. There is no invisible barrier between guests and the people who work there—just a shared appreciation for hospitality, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that feels wonderfully genuine.
During one of those conversations, we asked a member of the team what he thinks makes Ett Hem different from other places.
His answer stayed with us.
Many of the employees previously worked as restaurant or bar managers but chose to leave because they no longer wanted the late-night lifestyle.
"We're paid well, we're treated well, and we don't have to work until the early hours anymore," he told us with a smile.
It's a remarkably smart approach.
By investing more in their employees, Ett Hem attracts exceptional people. They need fewer staff because those they have are highly skilled, staff turnover is low, and the team has the opportunity to grow together over many years.
And perhaps most importantly:
People who feel valued are happier. And happy people create better hospitality.
That feeling is impossible to fake—and you notice it in every interaction.
Final Thoughts
Ett Hem is a truly special place—one that stays with you long after you've left.
It's the kind of hotel we would return to again and again, not only because of its beautiful interiors or exceptional food, but because of the feeling it creates. A feeling that is increasingly rare.
If you're looking for a genuine escape without giving up the energy of the city, Ett Hem is exactly that. Tucked away on a quiet residential street, yet only minutes from the heart of Stockholm, it offers the perfect balance between tranquillity and urban life.
Luxury here isn't about excess—it's about thoughtfulness, trust, and making guests feel completely at home.
